The 2019 IEEE Data Science Workshop is a workshop that aims to bring together researchers in academia and industry to share the most recent and exciting advances in data science theory and applications. In particular, the event will gather researchers and practitioners in various academic disciplines of data science, including signal processing, statistics, machine learning, data mining and computer science, along with experts in academic and industrial domains, such as personalized health and medicine, earth and environmental science, applied physics, finance and economics, intelligent manufacturing.

We present a stochastic, limited-memory Broyden Fletcher Goldfarb Shanno (LBFGS) algorithm that is suitable for handling very large amounts of data. A direct application of this algorithm is radio interferometric calibration of raw data at fine time and frequency resolution. Almost all existing radio interferometric calibration algorithms assume that it is possible to fit the dataset being calibrated into memory. Therefore, the raw data is averaged in time and frequency to reduce its size by many orders of magnitude before calibration is performed.
